ACC Media Release - Inauguration of ACC Thondebhavi Cement Works in Karnataka

ACC’s newest cement plant in Thondebhavi, Karnataka, was inaugurated today by Dr M Veerappa Moily, Hon’ble Union Minister for Law and Justice, in the august presence of Dr Mumtaz Ali, Minister for Haj/Wakf and Minority Affairs, Karnataka and other distinguished guests. Speaking to the mammoth gathering, comprising government officials, customers, dealers, employees and the citizens of Thondebhavi, Dr Moily said, “Karnataka is very proud to welcome ACC’s new plant in Thondebhavi. We are very happy to have you here. Your presence will help accelerate the development of Karnataka. The people of Chikballapur will welcome any initiative made by ACC to help with their economic and social development.” The new plant becomes the nearest cement plant for Bengaluru city thus ensuring fresh and prompt supply of cement to this fast expanding metropolis.

A GREENFIELD PROJECT
ACC Thondebhavi Cement Works was set up as a Greenfield project in the picturesque Thondebhavi village, in Gauribidanur Tehsil of Chikballapur District, Karnataka. Installed at a cost of about Rs 350 Crores, this cement grinding plant has a capacity of 1.60 Million Tonnes per annum and will produce Fly-ash based Portland Pozzolana Cement. The plant will have its own railway siding. Clinker is received by rail from ACC’s modern cement plants at Wadi in Gulbarga district.

LATEST GENERATION & ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY PLANT
The Thondebhavi Cement plant is designed as a latest generation cement grinding plant that is fully automated and can be operated by a single button - making it the first one of its kind in India. The grinding system at this plant comprises state-of-the-art Vertical Roller Mill (VRM) technology.

ACC has invested considerable resources to ensure that the plant maintains the highest possible standards in environment management and is wholly environment-friendly. It is equipped with sophisticated air pollution control systems to stop dust and fugitive emissions. More than half of the land area of the plant campus is dedicated to cultivating of a verdant Green belt. The entire plant will stand in a greenery filled campus surrounded by carefully tended horticulture and landscaped gardens.

PARTNERING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN KARNATAKA
ACC Thondebhavi becomes the first major industrial unit to be established in Chikballapur District. Besides this the plant will generate considerable opportunities to create sustainable livelihoods for well over 1200 people through direct and indirect employment and the creation of ancillary businesses such as packaging, road transport and other trades.

Allotment of Coal Blocks - Agreement with Government of Madhya Pradesh

ACC has entered an arrangement with the Madhya Pradesh State Mining Corporation Limited (MPSMC), a Government of Madhya Pradesh Undertaking, by which the State Government will make available four coal blocks for prospecting and mining through joint venture companies to be set up between MPSMC and ACC Mineral Resources Limited (AMRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of ACC Limited.

A Joint Venture agreement was signed between AMRL and MPSMC for exploration, development and mining of coal, subject to feasibility, from four coal blocks at Marki Barka, Bicharpur, Semaria Piparia and Morga IV blocks, which together have approximate reserves of 200 million tones. The four mines will be optimally linked to supply coal to the company’s cement plants at Gagal, Kymore, Tikaria and Lakheri, replacing the coal needs of these plants currently sourced through e-auctions and the open market. The mines are expected to become operational in four to five years.

Coal is essential to the manufacture of cement in India. However regular supply of the required quality and quantity of coal has for long been a critical constraint in cement production. Captive sourcing of coal from these dedicated mines will lead to improved performance of the company’s cement plants as a direct result of better supply assurance, lower inventory carrying costs and, above all, consistent and better quality. This arrangement with the Government of Madhya Pradesh will provide long-term assurance for a most vital source of the company’s energy requirements for some of its cement plants in northern India.

ACC Media Release

We have noticed certain unvalidated information carried in the press on cement prices in Delhi published on May 2.

We would like to clarify that ACC has not increased prices in Delhi since 1st April and has no plans of increasing price in Delhi in near future. The retail price of ACC cement is currently quoted in the range of Rs 233-235/bag in different parts of the city as compared to Rs240-242/bag a month back, a reduction of Rs 5/bag. During the corresponding months of the previous year (April-May 2008) the retail prices in Delhi for ACC Cement was Rs 240-242/bag.

Pakistan cement producers are despatching their surplus produce at marginal costing. They have reduced price from US$75-76/MT to US$52-53/MT now. The quantity imported via Wagah border in the current month is expected to be around 45-50000 MT which was also the case in the corresponding month of the previous year. Withdrawal of CVD and import duty will therefore only reduce revenue earning of the Government and improve margins of the Pakistani cement producers.

Capacity utilization of the Indian cement industry is presently at it's peak. Capacity as reported in the published data consists of capacity at the end of a month. This capacity comprises of all old capacities and a few new capacities reported to have been commissioned till the end of the reporting month. As all new capacities take some time to stabilize, the total capacity utilization shows below 100% level despite the fact that all old capacities operate at over 100% utilization.

Cement prices vary from location to location, and depend on the demand supply balance. With large capacity additions expected in the next two quarters it is expected that the prices will stabilize from July onwards.

ACC's comment on the 3rd Stimulus Package

ACC’s Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. J DattaGupta, welcomed the Union Finance Minister’s decision to reduce excise duty on bulk cement by 2 per cent. "This move will be of mutual benefit to the Company and the bulk customers. This is expected to stimulate demand from the real estate, commercial and infrastructure segments," he stated.

"However, the cement industry’s long-standing request for providing abatement on excise duty on MRP is yet to be considered by the Government," he added.
